VMware Training This Week

Some Good Ol' Fashion Book Learnin'

View From Lounge @ Global Knowledge

I'm in training all week.  The course is called VMware vSphere: Fast Track [V4].  I'm digging the location: One State Street Plaza (a building I remember photographing due to its interesting juxtaposition with the building next to it) down in the Financial District - just one subway stop from our apartment.  Today I walked out the door of the building and was walking into our place ten minutes later.  I know my usual 30-minute commute means I have it easier than most New Yorkers, but what a difference 20 minutes can make.

I'm taking this class as the first step in getting my VCP (VMware Certified Professional) certification.  Step 2: Study.  Step 3: Take Exam.  Step 4:  Collect Underpants.  Step 5: ?.  Step 6: Profit.

The last professional training I attended was a Windows 2008 class I took through New Horizons.  The instructor really didn't know the material.  Also, they didn't get enough people signed up for the course so instead of having the instructor in the class, they had a web conference (with no video) where an instructor ran the class from King Of Prussia (which is in Pennsylvania) and had students sign in from around the northeast.  And the course cost just as much as it would if there was an actual trainer in the room.  I wasn't to pleased with the experience.  At least they got me access to some online practice exams to try to make up for it.

So when it came time to take some more training I decided to look up Global Knowledge (I attended some training there in NC years ago) to see if they had an NYC location.  It's a pretty nice facility.  The panoramic views of Upper New York Bay from the huge corner lounge are pretty spectacular.  I didn't realize the Global Knowledge is actually headquartered at the Cary, NC facility I had visited before - until a training adviser called me from down there.

I found this lunch spot a short walk away and am predicting a spike in my red meat intake this week.
