Pic du Jour - Oakland, Day 1
First Oakland Fact learned from a Bay Area Native.
The Cranes located down in the Estuary are said to have been the inspiration behind George Lucas's AT-AT Walkers. I see the resemblence, but can't confirm whether this is indeed a fact or an urban legend... I'll tell you one thing, it's just as cold in the Bay Area as it is on the Planet Hoth.
I believe Mark Twain said it best, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
Here's a picture of the Cranes from the Jack London Aquatic Center. Apparently, Jack London drank a lot in Oakland so they named some parks after him... fact number 2.
And good call on the Sam Clemens quote. Another one of my favorites (having nothing to do with San Fran): "When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."
